After the disastrous Italian defeat in the Battle of Caporetto, Vittorio Orlando, newly appointed Italian Prime Minister, replaced General Luigi Cadorna as Italian Chief of Staff with General Armando Diaz.

Diaz commanded the Italian Army during the Austro-Hungarian offensive in the Second Battle of the Piave in June 1918. Pressed by the Allies for an offensive against Austria-Hungary, he finally struck on October 24 in the Battle of Vittorio Veneto.
