Without a prior declaration of war, Bulgaria joined Germany and Austria-Hungary in their invasion of Serbia, attacking Serbia from the east on October 14, 1915. The Germans and Austro-Hungarians had begun their invasion, attacking from the north, on October 5. Although Serbia had turned back three Austro-Hungarian invasions in 1914, the country quickly fell to the invasion by the three Central Powers.

Bulgaria invaded Macedonia on October 11, driving back French General Maurice Sarrail, trying to advance up the Vardar River on the Salonica Front.
