Elected President of France in 1912, Poincaré held the post through World War I. As President, he had the right to nominate the Prime Minister, and his Prime Ministers through the war were Viviani, Briand (from the autumn of 1915), Ribot (who oversaw the Nivelle Offensive in April 1917), Painlevé, and, from late 1917 to the end of the war, Georges Clemenceau.

A moderate conservative who expected war in Europe, Poincaré was elected in 1912 advocating military expansion and improved ties to Russia.
