After twin defeats in the Battles of Gnila Lipa and Rava Russka, the Austro-Hungarian Army was being driven from Galicia in northeastern Austria-Hungary and back against the Carpathian Mountains as Austro-Hungarian Commander in Chief Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf fretted. He was forced to beg for assistance from Germany, something he would do for the rest of the war.
