German New Guinea was the northeastern quadrant of Guinea in the Pacific Ocean, north of the Coral Sea and Australia. British Guinea was to the south and the western half of the island was controlled by Netherlands. Off the coast of German Guinea lay the Bismarck Archipelago and the northern Solomon Islands. The colony was Germany's first overseas possession, made a German protectorate in 1884.

German New Guinea was taken by Australian forces in 1914.

On 11 September 1914 an Australian naval and military force attacked the wireless station at Bita Paku, losing six dead and four wounded, Australia's first casualties in the war.

All German forces in the colony surrendered on September 21, 1914.

German New Guinea is a colony.
