Trentino and Alto Adige were part of Italia irredenta — unredeemed Italy — regions of Austria-Hungary with substantial Italian-speaking populations. Seizing them was a principle Italian war aim.

Asiago and the Asiago plateau, site of the 1916 Austro-Hungarian Asiago Offensive, are east of southern Trentino.
