Flanders is a region of Belgium and northern France. In Belgium it is the northern Flemish- or Dutch-speaking part of the country. It extends into the bordering area of northern France in Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Flanders was the site of much of the fighting that saw the German conquest of Belgium, the Battle of Mons, Great Britain's first military engagement in the war, the First Battle of Flanders (the German name for the Battles of the Yser and the First Battle of Ypres) (all in 1914), the Second Battle of Flanders in 1915, the Third Battle of Flanders in 1917, also known as the Battle of Passchedaele and the Second Battle of Flanders. Operation Georgette, the Battle of the Lys, was the second of five German drives to try to grasp victory in 1918.
